Signs, proposing to sell kidney with blood type AB+ and phone number to call, are becoming more common in Iran

The local ‘Shahr Ara’ daily in the city of Mashhad, northeast Iran, published a report on the very profitable market of purchasing and selling human body parts in Iran, including “eyeballs”.
Purchasing and selling vital human organs, one day practiced only in secret and written on small pieces of papers to inform specific people, is now finding its path to more sophisticated and popular routs namely on internet, the report says.
“Two, three days ago I had gone to Mehdi Avenue in the Shaheed Faramarz Abbasi neighborhood to prepare a report. This time around something new caught my eye. Signs reading ‘Kidney for sale’, ‘Discount on kidney for sale’ were seen a lot to this day, but this next sign was different. On the wall it could be read, ‘Eyeball for sale’”, the report added.
The writer of this report calls the number of the eyeball seller to become certain of what he read.
“Finally, after much effort my phone call was answered. I heard the voice of a young man, whom I don’t think was over the age of 40, and I discussed the issue as a buyer on his offer to sell his eye,” he wrote.
The seller introduces himself as “M” and says he is 34 years old. He went on to tell the reporter, “I sold one of my kidneys six months ago in Tehran for 60 million rials (around $1,700). I am now under immense financial pressure and I am willing to sell my eye for the same amount of money. I have three children, illiterate and out of work, and I have to provide for my family. Take my eye for yourself, do whatever you want with it; who cares if I have a hand or not? A foot or not? If necessary, I am even willing to sell my skin.”
